Borah’s Jake The Snake Spins a New Tail

The Capital Eagle's were once home to "Jake The Snake" Plummer. so it's more than a bit ironic that another Jake came back to "Snake" Capital out of the 5A state football playoffs!

Jake Standlee of Borah started the 2018 season on fire as the Lions quarterback and at one point had 12 touchdown passes and no interceptions and Borah was unbeaten.

Then September 28th Standlee broke his throwing wrist and there was a question if he'd play again his senior season.To make matters worse Lion receivers Chase Nett and Austin Bolt were also injured and just like that a trio of offensive weapons were on the sideline and the Lions began to lose games.

Borah was 1-4 heading into the playoffs and a big underdog against Capital last Friday at Dona Larsen park in the 630 The Fan game of the week. The Eagles had beaten Borah 39-7 in the regular season and the same type of outcome was expected.

The only hint things were changing for Borah came on the last night of the regular season two weeks ago when the Lions took #1 ranked Rocky Mountain to the wire in a 27-20 loss at Rocky.

Jake Standlee actually saw time in that game as a defensive back. I called the game on 630 The Fan and was surprised to see Standlee in uniform. He was wearing a black support cast on his right wrist along with some tape.

So last Friday I wasn't surprised to see Standlee in uniform but I was surprised to see receiver Chase Nett suited up and Austin Bolt had returned to play three weeks ago so all of a sudden Borah looked more like the Borah that started the season on fire!

Stadlee took the field against Capital on defense as he did against Rocky. The black support cast was gone but his right wrist was heavily taped. Nonetheless Standlee came up with a first half interception!

Meanwhile, as he had since Standlee was injured, Ellis Magnason started for Borah at quater-back and the receiver turned QB would lead the Lions to a 14-10 halftime lead over Capital. Then, as if the halftime lead wasn't surprising enough, it was jake Standlee at QB when the third quarter began.

Magnason had suffered a slight shoulder injury in the first half and couldn't throw the ball with any authority.

At halftime the Borah coaching staff began to ponder the unthinkable but Jake Standlee said he was ready and could handle the situation.

Standlee was 12 of 16 passing in the second half for 281yards and three touchdowns. He led Borah to 28 points and a 42-27 win, Borah's first playoff win since 1995..

Magnason went back to receiving and made some big catches as did Chase Nett who on his return from the injury list caught 7 passes for 166yards and 2 touchdowns. Austin Bolt added 7 catches for 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns and just like that it was the old Borah renewed and as dangerous a team as there is right now in the playoffs.

The Lions will head to Coeur d'Alene Friday for a showdown with the 8-0 Vikings who enjoyed a first round bye but will have their hands full with a rejuvenated Borah squad.

While Jake Standlee knows Jake Plummer is the original "Snake", he definitely served noticed against Capital there's a new serpent in town who has proven to be deadly in these 5A State playoffs.
