Boise State swimmer Lauren Sale (pronounced Saul-lay) has become the first female Samoan swimmer to win a gold medal in a major competition.

Sale won the 200 meter backstroke at the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa where 24 Pacific nations are competing.

The Bronco junior recorded a personal best time in the preliminaries and then won the final race in 2:20:84.

Sale will compete in several other events such as the 50-meter backstroke and the 100-meter butterfly both set for late Wednesday.

All the swimming events are being held at the Samoa Aquatic Center in Apia.
