Iconic mixed martial arts fighter Kimbo Slice died Monday in Florida at the age of 42.

It's unclear how he died. Slice went to a hospital in the town of Margate on Monday. Officers who went to his home did not find anything of note.

Bellator, the company which represented Slice, released a statement, saying, "We are all shocked and saddened by the devastating and untimely loss of Kimbo Slice, a beloved member of the Bellator family. Bellator president Scott Coker also said Slice was "a charismatic, larger-than-life personality that transcended the sport."

Slice, who was born Kevin Ferguson and previously fought for the UFC, last fought at Bellator 149 back in February in a match he won, but was later changed to a no-contest after he tested positive for steroids and having too much testosterone.

Slice helped bring mixed martial arts to the mainstream. His third fight, back in 2008, was broadcast on CBS -- the first MMA bout on primetime TV.

Slice's death was a popular topic on Twitter, with some even pointing out it occurred shortly after the passing of Muhammad Ali.
